Meaning of the Title 'Jesus Chirist Lamb of God'

The Significance and Meaning of the Title, Jesus Christ the Lamb of God.

John the Baptist gave Jesus this title. It had awesome meaning for the Israelites who understood the scriptures. See John 1:29, 36 for details. The people knew the importance of the Passover Lamb. It is the most sacred of ceremonies for them and us. If an Israelite has a justifiable excuse for missing the Passover, it was required that they must make it up 30 days later or be cut off from their people. It is the only Holy Day that occupies such an exalted position in the worship of the true God. It is demanded by God for his people.

The first Passover models the importance of the Lamb of God. Each family had to be under the protection of a Lamb’s blood or face certain death that night. They painted the blood of a slaughtered lamb on the door post of their dwelling. See Exodus 12. They entered the house now under the protection of the blood of a lamb. The Israelites ate the Lamb Passover meal and stayed indoors that night until the death angel PASSED OVER the home so protected at mid night.   The physical Lamb’s blood protected the Israelites physically from dying while the blood of the true Lamb Jesus will ultimately protect all mankind from the real death, the second death- the spiritual death. See Heb 10:1-10. In the Temple they sacrificed a lamb in the morning and evening. This was a shadow of Christ’s once and for all sacrifice for all mankind. See Exodus 29:38-46. Jesus is referred to as the Passover lamb to gentile Christians. See I Cor 5:7. Peters says it was planned from the founding of the world that Jesus’s blood like the lamb’s blood would redeem us. See I Peter 1:18-21

WHY WAS THE SACRIFICE OF CHRIST ON THE STAKE SO VALUABLE

Col 1:16 says that Jesus created all things, even things in the permanent spiritual world. Therefore if He created everything then He is God and of more value than all the things He created. He could create them, and more, all over again if he so wished. God the Father and Jesus risked so much for mankind. Wow! What love for all of us? It was not an easy sacrifice. Christ went to Golgotha as a lamb to the slaughter. See Acts 8:32 and Isa 53:4-12. See also Luke 22:42. Jesus wanted or inquired in deep fervent prayer for God to conduct this sacrifice in an easier manner. But to convey their deep and overwhelming love for us God decided to do it the horrifically hard way. Crucifixion was used by the Roman Empire as an execution method to terrorize the public into obedience. It was a horrible way to die. We need to be thankful and appreciative for the enormous sacrifice of both Father and Son. It might have been even harder for the Father.

NO ONE CAN BE WORTHY OF JESUS’S SACRIFICE. ALL WE CAN DO IS TO BE COMPLETELY THANKFUL AND APPRECIATIVE.

When Jesus died the thick, expensive and strong vail in the Temple was torn in two, as a sign that we no longer needed to go through the priest. We can now have audience directly with the greatest power in the universe, God in our prayers. Thank you Jesus! Because we are in Christ, when God looks upon us He sees a clean slate. We are legally and symbolically as white as snow. Jesus blood has washed our sins away. See Romans 8:1-4. John 3:16 says that God so loved the world that he gave dramatically and lovingly his only son so that men would not perish. We should in our of course, imperfect, manner return that love to God. That would make God happy and would allow the Holy Spirits help to grow more Christ like. See John 14:15, 21, and 15:9-14. Jesus says if we love him we will obey God’s Holy Commandments which are the testimony of God, and love one another. A father would be so happy if he saw his sons growing in loving character. Let us try and make Jesus and the Father happier with us.
